Contour Wireframe

So here's how to create wireframe renders in Maya using mental ray and contours. It can also be done using the hardware renderer but this is much easier and you get a better result.

  1. Create a material for your object.
  2. Call the new material WireFrameMTRL and the shading group WireFrameSG.
  3. Go to the shading group, click the mental ray tab -> Contours tab.
  4. Click enable contour rendering.
  5. Set the color to whatever you want.
  6. Set the width to whatever you want, a good place to start is 0.5 (this is for the wireframe lines).
  7. Apply the material to the object.
  8. Open Render Settings
  9. Select Mental Ray as your renderer.
  10. Under the Features tab scroll down and expand the Contours tab.
  11. Select Enable Contour Rendering.
  12. Open the Draw By Property Difference tab.
  13. Click Around All Poly Faces.
  14. Render! (May want to test render to make sure the wireframe lines aren't too chunky or too small).

Elk Hair Caddis

Just stumbled upon this really cool piece of animation, it's by a guy called Peter Smith, it's his graduation film from The Animation Workhouse in Denmark. The flexibility of the characters is really nice.

And incase like me, you were wondering how this thing was put together, it is a combination of 3D and stop motion animation, but don't take my word for it, watch this delightful video too.

Artefact 1: Empathy Through Situation

This is an attempt at creating empathy through a story situation, the character having only his body language to communicate to the audience. The aim is that the audience will empathise with how the character is feeling.
